Intiman Theatre and BECU Announce "Angels in Seattle" Award Recipients

Intiman Theatre and BECU have partnered to create the “Angels in Seattle: Arts Advocate Awards” which will be distributed on the first day of HOMECOMING Performing Arts Festival. Five artists whose steadfast work during the pandemic kept our communities thriving will each receive a $1,000 check sponsored by BECU. One recipient each was selected by Intiman Theatre, LANGSTON, Red Eagle Soaring, BeautyBoiz, and Velocity Dance Center. The focus of the awards is to honor the unsung heroes of the industry: arts administrators, arts educators, and artists working behind the scenes.

The arts community is always stepping in to lend a hand during a crisis, and these five recipients were beacons of hope and resilience for all of Seattle during the COVID-19 pandemic: Alyza DelPan-Monley (selected by Velocity for their work making the dance community more equitable, innovative, and accessible); Ana María Campoy (selected by Intiman for founding WashMasks Mutual Aid, providing PPE and support for migrant and seasonal farm workers); Jess Chrivoli (selected by Red Eagle Soaring for their volunteer work at the Seattle Indigenous Youth Art & Performance Summer Workshop); Michael B. Maine (selected by LANGSTON for his work uplifting underrepresented voices and equipping local artists with a focus on Black and QTPOC artists); and Sefina Vailoa Aulei (selected by BeautyBoiz for her work mentoring queer people with priority to young trans women of color in the House and Ballroom community).

“BECU drives our purpose to improve the financial well-being of our members and their communities from the credit union philosophy of People Helping People,” shares Stephen Black, Vice President Brand Strategy at BECU. “To recognize the contributions of these Angels in Seattle is a natural extension of that commitment.”

The recipients will be honored at an outdoor award ceremony held on Saturday, September 18th at 6:00pm. A Festival Pass or Single Day ticket for HOMECOMING is required to attend the ceremony. Tickets range from $5-$105. A limited number of FREE FOR EVERYONE tickets will be available at the box office on the day of the festival.

Meet the Recipients

Alyza DelPan-Monley

(Selected by Velocity Dance Center)
Alyza DelPan-Monley (they/she) believes in the expressive power that can be accessed in the body through movement. Their work has been presented at Cafe Nordo, Washington Ensemble Theater, ArtsWest, and On the Boards. They are curious about what’s possible in the virtual space, as explored through their class TOUCHPAD: encoding the body for virtual realities. They also remain curious about touch, intimacy and the subjectives meanings inside of gesture and contact, as their and Leah Crosby’s project www.unhadhugs.com. They perform and collaborate regularly with MALACARNE and Salvage Rituals and strive to participate in and build processes where everyone feels like they can exist in their fullest selves by cultivating our bodies’ unique form of expression. www.alyzadpm.com

Note from Velocity Dance Center:
Alyza is super active in the Seattle dance community, and they show up in a lot of ways — teacher, collaborator, director, choreographer, dancer, volunteer, sounding board, to name a few. In all of these roles they are a caring, curious, and imaginative being who is also a fierce advocate for open and equitable frameworks of art-making. We see them shaping processes that are making the Seattle dance community more innovative, more accessible, more fun (!!), and more loving. Thanks for your work Alyza — we love you!

Ana María Campoy

(Selected by Intiman Theatre)
Ana María Campoy (she/her) is a Mexican-American theatre artist, educator, and advocate. Regionally, she has worked for OSF, Seattle Children’s Theatre, and Seattle Repertory Theatre among many others. One of her most cherished acting roles is Catherine in a bilingual adaptation of David Auburn’s Proof, which she also produced and translated alongside director Arlene Martínez-Vásquez. She’s developed multiple bilingual scripts for Seattle Shakespeare Company; her fifth adaptation, Romeo y Julieta, premiered spring 2021. She works as a Theatre Mentor for Arts Impacts’ Voices from the Field Program, working with fantastic public school teachers in migrant districts across Washington state. She has toured nationally in Living Voices’s solo show, La Causa. Recently, she was one one of five Associate Artists with ArtsWest Theatre for their 2021-2022 Season. She currently serves on the board for Sound Theatre and was newly named as Associate Artist for Seattle Shakespeare Company.
In addition to her work within the arts, she founded and now runs the volunteer collective, WashMasks Mutual Aid, to provide PPE, support, and advocacy for migrant and seasonal farm workers and their families during this current pandemic (www.washmasks.org; @washmasks on Instagram).

Note from Intiman Theatre:
Ana María used her art-making space to create mutual aid community hubs during the pandemic. Because of her dexterous thinking and bold heart, many mothers were able to celebrate Mother’s Day in abundance, and her mask distribution kept hundreds of WA farm workers safe. Thank you for all you do to keep our community safe!

Michael B. Maine

(Selected by LANGSTON)
Michael B. Maine (he/him) is a Seattle-based, socially engaged artist and creative consultant, primarily focused on learning about and addressing issues of social inequity through media. He is concerned with the role that media has in developing perceptions and behaviors. Michael feels strongly about investing in the community and does so primarily through volunteering, board service, mentoring, and community-based projects. He served as the president of the board for both Reel Grrls (a youth media organization) and Businesses Ending Slavery and Trafficking (an organization dedicated to reducing sex trafficking). Additionally, he takes a multidisciplinary approach to mentoring younger people who want to learn more about media literacy and production. His ultimate goal is to help create a media landscape that is more fairly produced, equitable, and representative of human identities and expressions. michaelbmaine.com

Note from LANGSTON:
Michael is an artist, curator, photographer, web designer, videographer, advocate, and all around good person. His work to uplift underrepresented voices and equip local artists–especially Black and QTPOC artists–has made a huge impact on our communities. He’s the last person to highlight the many good works he does, so we’d like to show him some love.

Sefina Vailoa Aulei

(Selected by BeautyBoiz)
Sefina Vailoa Aulei is the Founding Mother of The Illustrious House of Essence.
I am 27 years old and I work for an amazing grass roots nonprofit organization, UTOPIA Washington as the Program Coordinator for SWEI – Sex Worker Empowerment Initiative. As someone who holds indigenous identity as a Polynesian transwoman, a lot of love and culture is embedded into my culture, and I carry that into all relationships with other QTBIPOC brothers, sisters, and siblings. This natural instinct to nurture and support has especially helped shape and guide other girls and women like me and I’m very proud and grateful for it. And I’m thankful for the House & Ballroom culture that has molded me throughout my upbringing in the Foster Care system. It has taught me about chosen family and providing space for my Fellow Trans Women of Color. This award does not only acknowledge me, but my chosen family and home, The Illustrious House of Essence. Thank you. utopiawa.org

Note from BeautyBoiz:
Vai works tirelessly to support the LGBTQIA+ community by being a mentor to young queer people with priority to young trans women of color all over seattle. Vai opens her heart and her home to our most vulnerable community members and shows up constantly providing guidance and resources to people who need it. We want to say THANK YOU to Mother Essence for everything she does for BeautyBoiz and for the community at large.
