Based on a true story, I Am My Own Wife tells the fascinating tale of Charlotte von Mahlsdorf, a German trans woman who managed to survive both the Nazi onslaught and the repressive East German Communist regime, and the playwright who becomes obsessed with her story. In a stunning tour de force performance, one actor brings nearly 40 characters to life for a riveting look at memory, truth, and what it takes to survive.

About the Play

I Am My Own Wife is Doug Wright’s Pulitzer Prize–winning and Tony Award–winning one-person play, inspired by his real-life interviews with Charlotte von Mahlsdorf, a German antiquarian and transgender woman who curated an extensive collection of historical artifacts in Mahlsdorf, Germany.

In opposition to the all too common flattening of trans women, villainized in life and martyred in death, the woman we meet in I Am My Own Wife is an expansive figure. Charlotte is at times enchanting, at others timid; she is intelligent, passionate, defiant, protective, evasive, bitter, prideful, and above all, staunchly self-defining. It’s appropriate that a woman who dedicated her life to preserving history is remembered in such vivid detail, and it would be a disservice to depict her as any less than that.

Dani Davis, actor

Wright first traveled there in early 1993 to meet Charlotte and explore her extraordinary life, and those conversations, along with his growing fascination with her, evolved into this “tour de force” theatrical work.

Structured as a solo performance in which a single actor embodies more than 35 distinct characters, the play brings to life Charlotte’s story alongside the many voices that shaped, challenged, and interpreted her legacy.

At its core, the piece follows her survival through both the Nazi and Communist regimes in East Germany, focusing in particular on her life under the Communist state and the controversy that later emerged surrounding allegations of her involvement as an informant.

Charlotte’s story is complex, enigmatic, and deeply human. An outsider who lived authentically in the face of immense political and social danger, she remains a figure defined as much by resilience as by contradiction. Wright’s play embraces that ambiguity, examining not only Charlotte’s life but also the nature of truth, memory, and identity itself.
