By Bertolt Brecht – Translated by Michael Neininger – Adapted by David Quicksall and Gavin Reub – Directed by Gavin Reub

January 13 – 30, 2027
Erickson Theatre, 1524 Harvard Ave, Seattle, WA 98122
Run time: 2hrs 30mins, including one intermission

In the 16th century, Gaileo knew that the Earth revolved around the Sun, and he could prove it! The Inquisition had other plans. Bertolt Brecht’s landmark play follows the clash between trailblazing physicist, Galileo Galilei, and the Catholic church, in a battle of truth and power. Music, technology, lavish parties, and dark conspiracies fuel this epic new adaptation.

About the Play

Set in the 16th century, Bertolt Brecht’s The Life of Galileo centers on one of history’s most influential scientists at a moment when knowledge itself is under threat.

Audiences can look forward to productions that honor the depth and precision of Chekhovian artistry while also exploring new voices and contemporary themes that resonate today. “Together, we aim to create experiences that are timeless yet immediate, art that challenges us as participants while bringing us solace as citizens. I don’t think we could take the next exciting step as a company if we didn’t have this foundation we are building with Intiman.”

Gavin Reub – Artistic Director,The Seagull Project

Galileo Galilei has discovered that the Earth revolves around the Sun—and he can prove it. But as his findings begin to challenge established doctrine, he finds himself at odds with the powerful forces of the Catholic Church and the Inquisition. What unfolds is a gripping clash between truth and authority, intellect and ideology, curiosity and control.

As Galileo gains access to new tools—most notably the telescope—his observations unlock revolutionary insights into the universe, while simultaneously drawing him deeper into political and moral conflict.

His work, which supports the heliocentric theories of Nicolaus Copernicus, contradicts centuries of accepted belief, forcing him to navigate the competing demands of patronage, institutional approval, and personal survival. Along the way, his choices ripple outward, affecting his family, his students, and his legacy as both a scientist and a public figure.

This bold new adaptation of Brecht’s landmark play brings the story into vivid, contemporary focus through music, technology, lavish staging, and elements of spectacle and intrigue. In examining Galileo’s rise, compromise, and eventual recantation under threat, the work raises urgent questions about integrity, responsibility, and the cost of speaking truth to power.
