Intiman Theatre Announces
Sara Porkalob as Co-Curator for 2017

Building on the success of 2016, Intiman announces a new inclusive leadership model as Sara Porkalob partners with Andrew Russell and Jennifer Zeyl

SEATTLE (Jan 12, 2017) —  Award-winning solo performer, actor, director and arts activist Sara Porkalob  will serve as co-curator of 2017 as part of a new Co-Curation leadership model designed to bring fresh voices and perspectives to Intiman Theatre’s programming.

“Sara is a singular voice in our region and should be supported in big ways, and in turn she will blaze paths and open doors for many others. Her deep interest in intersectionality and education mixed with her hysterical and powerful work as a performer makes her the right fit for Intiman Theatre at this time,” Andrew Russell, Intiman’s Producing Artistic Director, said.

The Seattle community will have the opportunity to meet Porkalob and watch her perform at Intiman’s second-annual #SHOWTHELOVE launch party on February 18 where she will help announce the theatre’s 2017 programming. #SHOWTHELOVE is a fun, online giving campaign that builds a vibrant community to empower a lot of people to give a little and make a huge difference. Last year this community-driven fundraising campaign helped Intiman raise over $75,000 from nearly 700 donors.

“As Co-Curator, I am thrilled to be part of this new, radical leadership model that Intiman Theatre created. In the move towards equity and representation of diverse voices and communities, people in positions of power have the greatest ability to enable that change. The Seattle community is full of narratives that deserve a full voice, and having a seat at the table with Intiman means I can give power to those narratives,” Porkalob said.

Intiman’s Co-Curator leadership model will raise up a new generation of artists and engage audiences with dynamic and relevant theatre. In 2016, responding to a demand for inclusive storytelling, Intiman partnered with leaders in our community who engage audiences and champion stories that are too often unseen, starting with notable local and national artist Valerie Curtis-Newton. With the success of this effort, Intiman staff and board made the decision to solidify and strengthen the Co-Curator position as an official change to its leadership model. Intiman built a staff that can support this new leadership structure and give the Co-Curator the power to guide programming, themes and overall focus of its programming.

After completing an intensive strategic planning process in late 2016, the board, staff and community at Intiman Theatre are more than ever committed to wrestling with inequities through theatre. Intiman made this commitment because communities are facing a divisive time in America and inclusive, community-driven theatre is imperative to help create connection, empathy and understanding.

“Audiences are looking to invest in and journey along with organizations who represent the things they care about, they are looking for an alignment of values, and in Seattle that means an open and inclusive space where room is made for typically underrepresented voices,” Intiman Board President Kevin Malgesini said. “We are excited by the success of Valerie Curtis-Newton as co-curator in 2016 and whether through the Emerging Artist Program or the co-curation model we look forward to further supporting ever more diverse voices and perspectives within leadership roles throughout the artistic community.”

“We can promise a year that will surprise, entertain, and lead with love. Love for the dynamic humans that call this region their home, love for the differences between us, and love for what bonds us together. I think of Seattle as one of the best cities in America, and cannot wait to wake this city up with what Sara and our team have in store,” Russell said.
