Intiman Theatre and The Seagull Project present

THE LOWER DEPTHS

By Maxim Gorky
Translated by Tyler Polumsky
Adapted by David Quicksall, Charles Leggett, and Gavin Reub
Directed by Gavin Reub

February 6-24, 2024

Erickson Theatre 1524 Harvard Ave, Seattle, WA 98122

As timely now as it was when it first debuted at the Moscow Art Theatre in 1902, Maxim Gorky’s masterpiece is brought to life in a new adaptation created by The Seagull Project over an 18-month process. Neglected, seeking refuge and hope, fourteen lost souls battle for love and humanity while pushing at the limits of the human spirit and a society at the breaking point.

Don’t miss this rare opportunity to witness 14 of the finest actors working in Seattle on the intimate 140-seat Erickson Theater stage. SEATING IS LIMITED

“The Seagull Project was founded on the belief that it takes time to create art with integrity, vision, and dedication to craft. Intiman has a long history of supporting work in that same vein, and it is truly an honor to create this production alongside them.”

-Gavin Reub

ABOUT THE PLAY

In the basement of the exploitative King family live nine people on the edge of the world. Card sharps, artists, sex workers, and more make up this dynamic cast of characters, whose dreams and realities bump against the low ceiling society has built for them. When a stranger arrives with a message of hope, their situation is challenged and their lives upended. An ensemble of fourteen actors paint a vivid portrait of life in the margins of society. Love, poverty, addiction, loss, and healing play across the stage in this contemporary adaptation of Maxim Gorky’s classic play.

The Lower Depths was first produced by the Moscow Art Theatre on December 18, 1902, where it was directed by Konstantin Stanislavsky. It is Gorky’s best known play and is now a hallmark of Russian realism.

Our co-producing partner:

Meet The Seagull Project

The Seagull Project was formed out of a passion for the works of Anton Chekhov, particularly his play, The Seagull. Having met and collaborated on Seattle Shakespeare Company’s wildly successful The Threepenny Opera, the founding producers — Julie Briskman, Brandon J. Simmons, John Bogar, Gavin Reub, and Alex Tavares  —  set about creating a new collaboration, one formed around a long-form, actor-driven workshop of Chekhov’s play. They began assembling an ensemble in 2011 and finally completed their cast in spring of 2012.

The ensemble soon began working with its resident director, John Langs, in daily sessions in preparation for the full production of The Seagull, which opened on January 25, 2013 at ACT Theatre in Seattle. The production was met with public and critical acclaim and the company toured the show to the Ilkholm Theatre in Tashkent, Uzbekistan in 2014. Upon returning to the States, The Seagull Project began its lengthy process for a second time, resulting in its 2015 production of The Three Sisters, which earned the Gregory Award for Outstanding Production the same year. Their 2017 production of The Cherry Orchard won the Peoples’s Choice (play) Gregory, and their Uncle Vanya premiered in February 2019 at ACT Theatre.
