Masterclass Guest Speakers

Students enrolled in the Associate of Arts Degree, emphasis in Technical Theatre for Social Justice program at Seattle Central College will attend Masterclasses with some of the top working professionals in the field of technical theatre.

Robert Aguilar is a Seattle based designer for theatre and dance. His work has been seen at Intiman, Seattle Repertory Theatre, 5th Avenue Theatre, Portland Center Stage, The Public, The Old Globe, ACT, Cincinnati Playhouse in the Park, Seattle Childrenā€™s Theatre, and Village Theatre among others. Robert has mentored many young lighting designers from around the country through the Design Apprenticeship program at Seattle Rep and the assistantship programs of Intiman. Robert believes that the hands-on professional experience that these kinds of programs offer is of immense value and he is humbled and honored to be a part of any young designer’s early career. Erin Bednarz (she/her) is a storyteller, connector, and sound fanatic who has lived in Seattle, WA for over a decade. Her career has taken her to regional theaters, Off-Broadway productions, award ceremonies, news publications, institutions, and classrooms around the country. Also an arts administrator, musician, actor, and producer, Erin has a particular knack for new work and takes a dramaturgical approach to most things. She is a community minded person, and attributes her path to each collaborative relationship she’s made along the way. She aims to tell stories that show a world we hope to live in one day. WEBSITE

Vada BriceƱo discovered her passion for lighting after her first theater production in high school. She graduated from DePaul University with a BFA in Lighting Design and served as the Lighting Design Intern at Seattle Repertory Theatre for the 2016-2017 season. She joined the Orangelite team in 2018 and then the Lightswitch team with the merger in 2019. Her favorite credits include leading the Overwatch League 2018-2019 team as the lighting director, gaffer for Hearthstone Summer Championships in 2018, tour programmer for Esperanza Spaulding ā€™12 Little Spells and programmer for a Bvlgari private showing and event. In her spare time, Vada enjoys sketching and finding new ways to push the envelope on every production.

Steve Coulter has nearly forty years’ experience designing, engineering, and implementing theatrical rigging, lighting, scenery, effects, and stage renovations. Steve was the Technical Director at ACT Theatre in Seattle from 1998 to 2017, where he oversaw the launch of hundreds of productions, including 20 world premiers. Before coming to Seattle, he was the Technical Director at Santa Fe Stages and for the Tandy Beal Dance Company. His passion is making things move: He has extensive knowledge in the areas of hydraulics, pneumatics, and automated motion control. After his tenure at ACT Steve oversaw the conversion of the Bagley Wright Theatre at Seattle Rep for their production of David Byrneā€™s musical Here Lies Love. He has continued to consult with numerous local theaters on their process and renovations. Steve has worked in theaters throughout the United States, Europe, and Mexico. In addition, he has worked on numerous film and television projects in multiple capacities. Recently he has applied his expertise to the visual arts, designing automation and movement for site-specific sculptures in the U.S. and Europe. He helped Cornish College of the arts to create and enhance its Technical Theatre curriculum, and taught there as an Adjunct Faculty. He has also taught classes and been a guest lecturer at University of California Santa Cruz, University of Nevada Las Vegas, Cabrillo College, University of Puget Sound and College of Santa Fe. Steve is a co-founder of the Good Arts Building in Pioneer Square, a venture dedicated to providing work space and economic viability for Seattleā€™s creative community.

Marcos Everstijn is a seasoned theatre professional with 24 years/ 150+ show experience in multiple facets of the industry. He is currently a freelance Set Designer and carpenter in the Seattle area and is a Stage Technician at UW School of Drama. Marcosā€™s previous experience has included the Steppenwolf, Alley, and Intiman Theatres among other regional theatres across the country. He has served as a Set Designer, Technical Director, Stage Supervisor, Master Carpenter, and mentor. He looks for opportunities to share what he has learned as well as seeking chances for further growth and development.

Reiko Huffman is a Scenic Designer currently located and originally from San Diego, CA.Ā  Earlier in Reiko’s career, Reiko gained experience working as a freelance Scenic Charge and Scenic Designer for local theatres such as Theater Schmeater, Washington Ensemble Theatre, ArtsWest, New Century Theatre Company, Freehold Theatre, and Book-It Repertory Theatre in Seattle, Washington. Reiko also continued to gain design and technical experience holding positions such as Resident Scenic Charge and Ensemble Member for Washington Ensemble Theatre, Resident Scenic Designer for Theater Schmeater, and Associate Venue Manager/Technical Director of West of Lenin in Fremont, Washington. As a Scenic Designer, Reiko explores intensive and emotionally propelled design. She embraces unconventional perspectives of stories in order to illustrate the complex narratives that lie beneath human words and actions. Currently, at San Diego State University earning her MFA, Reiko has been awarded the Graduate Student Fellowship Award and has designed on campus, MOXIE theatre in San Diego, assisted at Cygnet Theatre in Old Town, and worked at The Old Globe theatre in Balboa Park. Marcus Harrison Green is the publisher of the South Seattle Emerald. Growing up in South Seattle, he experienced first-hand the impact of one-dimensional stories on marginalized communities, which taught him the value of authentic narratives. After an unfulfilling stint in the investment world during his twenties, Marcus returned to his community with a newfound purpose of telling stories with nuance, complexity, and multidimensionality with the hope of advancing social change. This led him to become a writer and found the South Seattle Emerald. He was named one of Seattleā€™s most influential people by Seattle Magazine in 2016 and was awarded 2020 Individual Human Rights Leader by the Seattle Human Rights Commission.

Jasmine Jamillah Mahmoud is Assistant Professor in Performing Arts & Arts Leadership at Seattle University. She is a performance historian, urban ethnographer, and curator whose work engages contemporary artistic practices, arts/cultural policy, black aesthetics, embodiment, and spatial racism. She is a board member with Intiman Theatre and On the Boards, and a Washington State Arts Commissioner. Her research examines how artistic practice, race, and policy influence urban geographies and processes of neighborhood change such as displacement, dispossession, and gentrification, as well as models for equitable neighborhood practices and anti-racist, decolonial urbanism. Her writing has been published in Modern Drama, Performance Research, TDR: The Drama Review, and Women & Performance. Invested in public scholarship and art criticism, she has written for Canadian Art, The Common Reader, Howlround, Hyperallergic, the South Seattle Emerald, and the Urban Cultural Studies Blog, where she is an Assistant Editor. In 2009, she co-founded and edited The Arts Politic, a magazine dedicated to solving problems at the intersection of arts and politics. She recently curated, Abstractions of Black Citizenship: African American Art from Saint Louis, an exhibition and series of public programming that transitioned to virtual engagement amidst Covid-19.Ā  In 2019, students in her “Public Policy and Advocacy in the Arts” course (Seattle University) built the Seattle Arts Voter Guide, engaging Seattle City Council and School Board Candidates on their arts platforms.Ā  FULL BIO

Peter Maradudin has designed the lighting for over 300 productions throughout the United States. His Broadway credits include Ma Raineyā€™s Black Bottom and the Pulitzer-Prize winning The Kentucky Cycle. Off-Broadway credits include Threesome, Hurrah at Last, Ballad of Yachiyo and Bouncers. He has designed regionally at The Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts, The Guthrie Theater, American Conservatory Theater, Berkeley Repertory Theatre, Mark Taper Forum, La Jolla Playhouse, The Old Globe, Steppenwolf, South Coast Repertory, Seattle Rep, A Contemporary Theatre, and Portland Center Stage, among many others. Peter is also an architectural lighting designer, with over 200 projects guided to completion. He has been a guest faculty at the University of Washington, UC Irvine, UC San Diego and served as Head of Lighting Design at the California Institute of the Arts. Lex Marcos is from Manila, Philippines. He studied Painting and Art History at the University of the Philippines, Diliman. His introduction to theatre was as an actor. The visual artist in him got him to set his eyes into the area of designing sets for theater productions. He designed sets in Manila for eight years, working with acclaimed Filipino directors, designers, visual artists, and playwrights. A turning point came when Lex assisted David Gallo who visited Manila to design the Manila premiere of Nine the Musical. Gallo, together with University of Washington School of Drama Professor Tom Lynch and NYU Tisch School of the Arts Design Chair Susan Hilferty, all made it possible for Lex to journey to the United States to join the MFA Program at the University of Washington, School of Drama. He recently finished his MFA in Scenic Design March 2017. After that, he then started designing shows in Seattle, Kent, Tacoma and Portland. His works Ang Post Office ng Hari and Umaaraw Umuulan KInakasal Ang Tikbalang have been selected for Philippines exhibit in the Prague Quadrennial of Performance Design and Space in 2011 and 2015. L.B. Morse is a lighting, scenic and multimedia designer for the performing and cultural arts, based in Seattle.Ā  He has designed at Intiman Theatre, Seattle Rep, 5th Avenue Theatre, Pittsburgh Public Theater, Indiana Repertory Theatre, Cincinnati Playhouse in the Park, Village Theatre, ACT Theatre, Seattle Childrenā€™s Theater, Woodland Park Zoo, UCSB Launch Pad, Tantrum Theater, Strawberry Theatre Workshop, Seattle Shakespeare Company and On the Boards, among others. Meghan Roche is a sound designer, editor, and engineer. Her theatre design work has been heard on stages at a variety of Seattle theatres including Seattle Public, Intiman, Theatre Schmeater, Seattle Shakespeare/Wooden O, upstart crow collective, ACT/ACTLab, Taproot Theatre Company, Sandbox Radio, Macha Theatre Works, Book-It Rep, West of Lenin, and Town Hall. She is a member of the TSDCA and USITT, as well as a permit worker for IATSE Local 15. Meghan holds a BA in Theatre with Honors from Seattle University and is currently an MFA Sound Design candidate at the University of California, Irvine, with a projected completion date of June 2022. Matt Starritt is a Seattle-based, freelance sound designer. One of his recent museum collaborations, Preston Singletary: Raven and the Box of Daylight is currently running at the Wichita Art Museum. In Seattle, he has designed for ACT, Seattle Repertory Theatre, Intiman Theatre, Seattle Shakespeare Company, Strawberry Theatre Workshop, Book-It Repertory Theatre, ArtsWest, Cherdonna, Kitten and Lou, New Century Theatre Company, BenDeLaCreme, Waxie Moon, zoe | juniper, and Washington Ensemble Theatre. Timothy White Eagle is a mixed race artist. His art practice rises from a decades long exploration of traditional ritual and embodiment practice.Ā  He crafts experiences and objects designed to heal both creator and audience.Ā  His preferred mediums include objects, photography, performance and installed space. His work has been presented on three continents. He was the recipient of the WAA/AIP Launch Pad award in 2019 as well as a Seattle City Artist award in 2020.Ā  He received a BFA in Theater from U of Utah. M. Crystal Yingling has a vast history of challenging social justice issues across the world. In Korea they worked on multilateral cooperation events through the arts. In North and West Africa they facilitated sports and cultural festivals to counter violent extremism. As a military commander in Afghanistan, they developed radio dramas to protect children from war effects, and worked with Afghan women to ensure equitable representation. As the Executive Director of Roxy Revival, they lead the effort to save a historic theatre from permanent closure. A retired Special Operations Officer, Crystal has been awarded numerous accolades including the Bronze Star Medal. Crystalā€™s dissertation, ā€œRock and Roll with It: Empowering Girls to Become Leading Womxn Through Music,ā€ evaluated the efficacy of music education. Crystal has been a lecturer and presenter at the University of Houston; Queen Margaret University, Scotland; Rossier School of Education, Los Angeles; Office of Civil Rights, Seattle; Hamad Bin Khalifa University, Qatar; The Chinese University of Hong Kong; Hong Kong University of Science and Technology; Ace International Business School, Nepal; Cornish; UW; Seattle University; and the US Departments of State and Defense. Jennifer Zeyl is a Seattle-based scenic designer, director, producer and mentor.Ā  They have taught at UW Graduate School of Drama, Seattle U, Cornish and Witman Colleges.Ā  As a free-lance scenic designer, she has mentored over a dozen of early career designers spanning 18 years. She designs regularly at ACT Theatre, Seattle Repertory Theatre, Intiman, Seattle Shakespeare and Seattle Childrenā€™s Theatre, as well as nationally at The Guthrie, NYā€™s Public Theater, The Omaha Rose and Two River Theatre Company.Ā  Founding Co-Artistic Director of Washington Ensemble Theatre, Jennifer now works for Intiman Theatre as Artistic Director.Ā  Honors include: Seattle Weekly Best Scenic Designer, winner of the Stranger Genius Award in Theatre and two Gregory Falls Best Scenic Designer.
