THE NAME “INTIMAN” actually says a great deal about the nature of our Theatre. INTIMAN was founded in 1972 by Margaret Booker, who named her new company after a small theatre in Stockholm founded by Swedish playwright August Strindberg. Like its namesake, Seattle’s theatre emphasized a close relationship between artist and audience.
IN SWEDISH, INTIMAN MEANS "THE INTIMATE," and that’s exactly what you’ll find here: an intimate performance space where every seat is close to the action; an intimate courtyard that can provide a relaxing escape from the outside world; and an intimate lobby with a helpful staff, a full bar, and a private room for special functions. When you come to INTIMAN, you enter the world of our theatre, and we want that to be a unique, intimate, exhilarating experience.
IN ADDITION to the wonderful theatrical experiences you’ll find at INTIMAN, we also connect our work to the lives of our audiences through a wealth of special programs, events and opportunities.
EACH ONE OF OUR SHOWS is enhanced by extensive Lobby Displays, filled with resonant historical information and connections to our local experience. We also offer a Book Club that meets in connection with each production to discuss a book that is a work of art in its own right, and adds a new level of understanding to the shows in our season. The American Cycle brings our commitment to great art out into the community, where you can join us for Community Readings of the classic stories in this initiative at venues throughout our region.
IF YOU ARE INTERESTED IN GOING BEHIND-THE-SCENES of the theatrical experience, join us for Spotlight Supper, where you can hear from our artists and watch a technical rehearsal in progress. Or stay after the show for one of our many post-play discussions, which feature expert guests as well as the writers, directors and actors who bring our productions to life.
WHAT IS YOUR INTIMAN EXPERIENCE GOING TO BE? You’ll find a myriad of ways to expand your theatrical experience here in our Theatre of "the intimate." Step through our doors and discover for yourself!
