Off to
Chicago
for 36 hours. It is the Rounding Third cast’s day off, adjusted by one day, so that I can attend Northlight's opening of
Chalk Garden, a play written by Enid Bagnold in 1953. She is a sort of Shaw-light, but really not-so-light since she too would write social criticism although subtly and through the eyes of the self critical British upper crust.
I awoke this morning (Thursday, March 30) to see that the Tribune critic, Chris Jones, himself an ex-pat from
Britain
, fully appreciated the play in a new and awakening way. He totally got what our director and cast and most importantly Ms. Bagnold, were about and gave it a RAVE! I'm not even on the plane yet and the review is on line! Click here to check out the review.
He is a thoughtful and fair critic who loves
Chicago
theatre and he must have written this review in the car on his way home. I really appreciate his appraisal of the play and seeing it in a new way, which is what we had hoped.
Chicago
has 200 theatres that employ Equity actors and it is much like
New York
in its theatrical passions and sophistication.
And kudos to Bill Brown our director who told me a year ago that it was his favorite movie, prompting me to read it and schedule a reading at which we decided to produce it. It's a lovely production, measured, beautifully spoken and mounted, and very mysterious. I am most proud of our team. I’m just about to fly the friendly skies of United once again.
So back to Seattle and Batter Up!
