PERFORMANCE JOURNAL | April 18, 2006

BJ Jones

After a great weekend of previews we swing into the last preview, setting what we have learned. Saturday night was like a rock show with tons of energy and huge reactions from an audience that was really stoked to be there. Sunday was a smaller house and more muted but engaged in the story and reacting in all the right places. Our performances were scaled accordingly and were nuanced and heartfelt while still engaging the audience comedically.

At Northlight our audience is much older than INTIMAN's and as I tell our casts in Skokie , "they are smiling as loudly as they can." At INTIMAN they can be heard...and how! I was quite excited by the reactions and by how hard the audience listened and picked up subtlety.

We are in a great place for the opening. The learning and work though really begins after opening. Reviewers come in an offer their two cents, but the real critics are the audiences that buy the tickets and experience the show night to night. That is who we are really working for.

Bart Sher got GREAT reviews for Awake and Sing! in New York and we are all thrilled for him. Congrats to INTIMAN! The home team continues its winning streak!

More anon,
Beej
