INTIMAN Theatre is one of the premiere theatres in the country. Under the leadership of Artistic Director Bartlett Sher and Interim Managing Director Kevin Maifeld , INTIMAN is defined by the boldest vision in the production of classics and new plays. The ambition and accomplishment represented in our history of milestone productions was recognized in 2006 by the honor of Tony Award for Outstanding Regional Theatre. INTIMAN’s work is characterized by exceptional acting, rigorous storytelling and luminous designs. The Theatre is rich with talent and amazing people—artists who have made their homes in Seattle and nationally recognized artists, all of whom are are dedicated to engaging our community in conversation, and to having an impact on our culture.

World premieres at INTIMAN include The Light in the Piazza by Craig Lucas and Adam Guettel, who are now the company’s Associate Artistic Director and Artist in Residence, winner of six 2005 Tony Awards; two plays by Craig Lucas, Prayer for My Enemy and Singing Forest, winner of the American Theatre Critics Association’s Steinberg New Play Award; Native Son, Kent Gash’s American Cycle adaptation of the novel by Richard Wright; Nickel and Dimed, Joan Holden’s adaptation of Barbara Ehrenreich’s non-fiction bestseller; and Robert Schenkkan’s The Kentucky Cycle, winner of the Pulitzer Prize.

Winner of a Golden Apple Award, INTIMAN serves more than 10,000 students annually through residencies in schools across Washington state and special initiatives that empower young people. Living History, our flagship arts-in-education program, draws on theatre and performance to engage students in critical thinking and awaken their imaginations. The American Cycle includes myriad participatory events that create a space for individuals to express their own ideas and beliefs while fully engaging the ideas and beliefs of others. In all of our work, we believe arts-animated civic dialogue is community building.

INTIMAN was founded in 1972 by Margaret Booker, who named her company after a small theatre in Stockholm founded by Swedish playwright August Strindberg. In Swedish, INTIMAN means “the intimate,” and that’s exactly what you’ll find here. From our beautiful performance space to layers of programs and events that have made our Theatre a gathering place for our audiences, the experience of INTIMAN is unique, intimate and exhilarating.
