What in God's Name is Seattle Thinking?

Last fall, we asked KUOW reporter Marcie Sillman to help us work on a new play that would be a snapshot of Seattle. She interviewed more than a dozen people who were brought, willingly or by circumstances, to a point of extreme crisis in their lives. These are some of the individuals who shared their stories:

  – a Cambodian-born survivor of a re-education camp in Vietnam, whose faith helped him survive six years in confinement after the fall of Saigon
– a son of a Pentecostal minister who suffers from a mysterious disease no one can diagnose
– a former Episcopal priest who was defrocked for having converted to Islam
– a survivor of the 2006 shooting at the Jewish Federation
– a Native American woman who returned to her tribe after a childhood in which she often “passed” as a white woman
– a committed atheist who grew up feeling like an outsider in his country and his church
– a Buddhist who traveled to Thailand to become a monk
– a gay political activist who grew up in South Africa during apartheid and now believes equally in spiritual and social justice

In coming to The Thin Place, these people did not give in to their crisis, but instead made the bold choice to wrestle with a higher power, and either question, confront or embrace their faith. Join them there in a world-premiere play developed and created by a trio of exciting new theatre artists, including local playwright Sonya Schneider, Intiman Associate Producer Andrew Russell and the extraordinary actor Gbenga Akinnagbe, who played Chris Partlow on The Wire.

Andrew Russell: “I’ve always had a passionate response to faith and religion, and its personal, societal and historical impact. Seattle has a reputation for boldly going against the grain, and I knew that would make this city the right place to explore this subject.”
