A courage to survive that cannot be ignored.
The most acclaimed new play of last year takes audiences to a rain forest bar-and-brothel in the war-torn Democratic Republic of Congo, where young women can find refuge from the chaos and violence that surround them. Refuge…but not escape. Equally acclaimed by critics and audiences, this powerful drama is one of those rare pieces of art that helps to define our culture. Set amid the horrors of halfway around the globe, with characters as real to us as people we know, Ruined is a tribute to how hope, spirit and wit can survive even when the human body is both the weapon and the battleground.
Directed by new Artistic Director Kate Whoriskey, Ruined is the first production of Intiman’s new five-year International Cycle, which will include one play each season that is produced in collaboration with artists and companies from around the globe, and fosters relationships with countries underrepresented to the American artistic community. Ruined will be co-produced with the Geffen Playhouse in Los Angeles and, after its run in Seattle, travel to South Africa’s Market Theatre, where the story will be shared with Congolese refugees in Johannesburg.
Kate Whoriskey: “The core commitment of Ruined is to celebrate and examine the spectrum of human life in all its complexities: the sacred with the profane, the transcendent with the lethal, the flaws with the beauty, and selfishness with generosity.” |
