”You are the state, you know what you need.... I'm not going to read you any speech. But I am going to tell you a story.”

In the presidential election year, INTIMAN completes its five-year American Cycle with Adrian Hall’s towering adaptation of Robert Penn Warren’s fictionalized portrait of Louisiana Governor Huey P. Long, which the New York Times calls the “definitive novel about American politics.” Warren ’s novel, winner of the Pulitzer Prize, is a masterfully written, vital look at the temptations and complexities of power. This bold adaptation teems with life on stage, featuring a cast of 16 actors plus musicians.

The American Cycle combines productions of classic American stories and opportunities for complex and generous civic dialogue. Its goals are to produce great art, cultivate curiosity, advocate for literacy, encourage an informed citizenry and understand interconnectedness.

Past productions are Harper Lee’s To Kill a Mockingbird (2007), adapted by Christopher Sergel and directed by Fracaswell Hyman, which became the best-selling production in INTIMAN’s history; Kent Gash’s searing world-premiere adaptation of Richard Wright’s Native Son (2006); Linda Hartzell’s iridescent staging of John Steinbeck’s The Grapes of Wrath, adapted by Frank Galati (2005); and Bartlett Sher’s production of Thornton Wilder’s timeless classic Our Town (2004).  Every single production has sold out performances.

In connection with the production, INTIMAN offers free programs that take place at the Theatre and at public venues ranging from neighborhood gathering spots, such as cafés and bookstores, to public institutions including libraries and museums. Each year INTIMAN works with Community Committees of civic leaders whose guidance helps ensure that the programs have a positive impact on the quality of life in our region.
